Knockevin Special School: Proud to Be an IQM Flagship School
At Knockevin Special School, we are proud to be recognised as an Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) Flagship School—a distinction that reflects our deep and ongoing commitment to inclusive education. This status is not simply an award, but a recognition of our ethos, our practice, and our determination to ensure that every pupil feels valued, supported, and able to thrive.

What is the Inclusion Quality Mark?
The Inclusion Quality Mark (IQM) is a nationally recognised award that celebrates schools demonstrating outstanding inclusive practice. It focuses on how well a school meets the needs of all learners, particularly those who may face barriers to learning.
Achieving IQM status involves a rigorous process of self-evaluation, external assessment, and continuous improvement. Schools work closely with IQM assessors to review their policies, teaching approaches, and whole-school culture. The aim is not only to recognise good practice but also to encourage schools to keep developing and sharing what works.
What Does It Mean to Be a Flagship School?
As a Flagship School, Knockevin has gone beyond achieving the standard IQM award. This recognition highlights schools that:
-
Demonstrate exceptional and innovative inclusive practice
-
Act as a beacon of excellence for other schools
-
Share expertise and collaborate within wider educational networks
-
Continue to evolve and improve year after year
We undergo an annual review process, ensuring that inclusion remains at the heart of everything we do. This keeps our practice dynamic, responsive, and forward-thinking.
What Inclusion Means in a Special School
Inclusion in a special school is both fundamental and transformative. At Knockevin, inclusion is not just about access—it is about belonging, participation, and opportunity.
For us, inclusion means:
-
Every pupil is seen as an individual, with their strengths recognised and celebrated
-
Learning is adapted and personalised to meet a wide range of needs
-
Pupils are supported to develop confidence, independence, and communication skills
-
Families are valued as partners in education
-
The school environment is safe, nurturing, and designed to allow every child to succeed
Inclusion in our setting also involves preparing pupils for life beyond school—helping them build the skills, resilience, and self-belief they need to engage with their communities and the wider world.
Continuous Reflection and Improvement
A key part of IQM Flagship status is our commitment to reflect, review, and refine our work. We regularly evaluate our provision and seek ways to improve outcomes for all our pupils. This includes:
-
Ongoing staff training and development
-
Collaboration with other schools and professionals including through a Northern Ireland IQM Cluster and a UK and Ireland Special School IQM Cluster
-
Listening to pupil voice and parent feedback
-
Implementing innovative teaching and support strategies
This process ensures that our inclusive practice is always evolving in response to the needs of our pupils.
